When we last met Eugene Jerome, he was coping with adolescence in 1930’s Brooklyn. Here, in Biloxi Blues, Eugene is a young Army recruit undergoing World War II basic training in Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1943. Determined to use these experiences for his writing career, Eugene keeps a detailed memoir. Alongside his fellow soldiers, Eugene endures a harsh drill sergeant, Merwin J. Toomey, navigates terrible army food, and bonds over a visit to a local prostitute. Throughout training, he learns about authority, danger, sex, assimilation, bigotry, homosexuality, and love, ultimately discovering that life can be both ugly and tender.
The play Biloxi Blues contains mature content and challenging themes that actors aged 18 and older will be asked to portray. Please review the following content disclosures:
– Language & Mature Themes: The script includes profanity, raw humor, and candid depictions of sexuality and masculinity in a military environment.
– Power Dynamics & Violence: Scenes depict intense verbal and emotional confrontations, bullying, and the harsh, arbitrary authority of military discipline, including a scene involving a firearm.
– Prejudice: The play addresses ethnic persecution and antisemitism through the use of bigoted remarks and derogatory stereotypes.
– Mental Health: As a “memory play,” the narrative touches on the psychological toll of war, including depictions of severe depression and trauma.
– Staging Requirements: Actors may appear in stage underwear or “smoke”
stage-appropriate cigarettes.
– The role of Rowena requires the actress to appear scantily clad under covers.
There is no nudity.
